The DC Trans Coalition (DCTC) is a grassroots community-based organization dedicated to fighting for the human rights, dignity, and equal access for transgender and gender-diverse people in the District of Columbia.
Past victories, future justice
We were founded in 2005, and we've had many victories in our brief history:
- In 2005 we won the addition of protection from discrimination regardless of gender identity or expression.
- In 2006 we clarified what it means to not discriminate on the basis of gender identity -- winning the most progressive laws in the country with respect to trans and gender-diverse individuals. Check out our ‘Know Your Rights” pamphlet for a full copy of the law;
- In 2007 we got the DC DMV to create a change-of-gender form for IDs and Driver’s Licenses;
- In 2008 we won the first ever police “handling procedure” for trans individuals in a campaign against the Metropolitan Police Department
We’ve come this far, let’s really make it happen
All the laws that we’ve won are only paper if we don’t have the power of an organization fighting to hold politicians, the police, agencies, companies and employers accountable. We want DC to be a place where all people can be free from discrimination, degradation, poverty, and harassment because of their gender identity or expression…and we have a long way to go. But…
We can WIN when you join us
The DC Trans Coalition is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization. Our power comes from the dedication and hard work of people like you. Right now, we’re running a campaign against the DC Department of Corrections to provide appropriate conditions and safer housing options to transgender people in prison, but we need your help to win.
Join us every first and third Tuesday of the month at the Whitman Walker Clinic’s Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center – We meet there at the Austin Center between 7:30 and 9:00 pm.
