Strongest anti-discrimination rules in the U.S.
On Oct. 27, DC's transgender anti-discrimination regulations went into effect. These rules are what give our law teeth, and make it enforceable against the real forms of discrimination trans people face.
- Trans people have the right to use restrooms and other gender-specific facilities.
- Failure to prevent harassment is considered discrimination.
- Single-stall restrooms must be marked gender-neutral.
- Employers must treat transgender-related needs the same as other legitimate medical needs.
- Employers cannot accuse trans people of misrepresentation because of the gender listed on a job application.
- Trans people can use their name on a job application, even if it is not their legal name.
- Information about a person's transgender status must be kept confidential.
- Misuse of pronouns, asking invasive questions, and "outing" a transgender person are all evidence of harassment and can be a cause for action.
